Merci d'avance.

While playing BG1 (The Original Saga, three-disc version) on a Windows XP machine, I repeatedly got an assertion error in CPathSearch.cpp, line 724 while in the caverns leading out of the Candlekeep crypts (the ones with the two greater basilisks guarding the exit). Somebody else posted about this in May, but didn't have a solution. I think I have come up with a fix.
First, note that none of the usual assertion error advice (clear your cache, reinstall) will not help. I have had two different games encounter this error. The first was an archived game running on a clean install. The second I played from the very beginning through to this point, also on a clean install, but they both encountered the problem. Cache cleaning/reinstalling will not help in this case.
The Interplay website was no help -- especially since it's been down for a couple of months, and shows no signs of returning. Thank goodness for the Wayback machine! You can access all of Interplay's tech support stuff at archive.org.
Finally, while reading through the patches page on planetbaldursgate.com (see Here for details) I came across this tidbit:
Quote:
To improve the pathfinding AI, after installing the patch, you can change the Path Seach Nodes entry under [Program Options] in the BALDUR.INI file. This variable can range from 2000 to 32000, with the default being 4000. Raising the number above 4000 will increase the number of nodes in path search at the expense of responsiveness to movement commands. Unless your machine is slower than a Pentium II, you can probably set the value to 32000 and not notice any speed difference.
While not directly related to an assertion error in the CPathSearch.cpp file, I thought it was worth a try. So I fired up my favorite text editor and increased the Path Search Nodes to 32000. Bingo! It played just fine. I got through the map without a single crash, and I do not expect the problem to recur. I'm not guaranteeing this will work for everybody, but it sure did the trick for me -- and if you're having this problem, you've probably got nothing to lose by trying it.
Hope this helps!
